One of the reasons why I love the Zelda series is because of the games' stories and interesting characters. Although some have stale NPCs.
Of course, those that know me well on the forums I go to know that I am a huge huge fan of Princess Zelda. I don't know how, but I came to admire her character. Most think she is just another typical damsel-in-distress-princess who doesn't do much. While it is true that she always get in trouble in some way in each of the game that she is actually present in, she still tries to help Link in any way she can. Or at least Zelda does something for most of the games. Let's see:
Legend of Zelda: Before getting captured by Ganon, Zelda split the Triforce of Wisdom into eight shards for extra prevention from Ganon getting it.
Adventure of Link: In the backstory, Zelda refused to tell her brother where the Triforce of Courage is. Of course, this led her to being cast in a neverending sleep.
A Link to the Past: As she was imprisoned in the castle, she sent a telepathic message to beg for help. When Link frees her, she tries to hide from Agahnim. When she is eventually held in the Dark World, she still helps Link in his quest by of course, telepathic message.
Link's Awakening: not present
Ocarina of Time: Despite giving Link the Ocarina of Time and therefore causing Hyrule to suffer Ganondorf's tyranny for seven years, Princess Zelda decided to disguise as Sheik not only to avoid Ganondorf, but to help the Hero of Time, who is Link. Also, she and the other Sages manage to seal Ganondorf away in the Dark Realm, formerly the Sacred Realm.
Majora's Mask: While she is only seen in a flashback, she did give him the Ocarina of Time for his journey, a crucial item that Link used to go back three days when necessary to save Termina.
The Wind Waker: Before Tetra is revealed who she really is, she eventually agrees to help Link on his quest to rescue his younger sister from Forsaken Fortress. Later, Tetra and the crew helped Link distract the Helmarok King. When Link first confronts Ganondorf, Tetra comes in to give Link support. As Zelda, she used the Light Arrows to help Link fight Ganondorf near the very end.
Twilight Princess: She guided Link to where the Master Sword is. Also, she gave Midna her strength when Midna was severely injured, since that was the only thing she could do to aid them.
Princess Zelda is also very wise and selfless. She often blames herself for something that isn't entirely her fault, or even something that isn't her fault in the first place! A true leader takes responsibility for careless actions. Most importantly, she always want what is best for Hyrule, and she is willing to defend it at all cost, even if it means helping Link on the side. So she has admirable traits, as you can see.
I do have more characters I like, but that's it for now.

I hope that's it for now. I liked the fairies. They are the most helpful things in the game, AND ANYONE WHO DENIES THAT, try going through OoT (especially Bongo-Bongo) without fairies. (and the other games) Their form has always dazzled me... the classic ball fairy. The human-like fairy is second in my opinion, but the insectoid fairies? Anyway, they are so helpful.

My favorite character would be Kafei. A troubled "youth" turned into kid form by the imp. For some reason, he always makes me think, if something were different, then what would affect things in the future.
